Why bother with the Olympics?

SO golf's big hitters want golf to be introduced to the Olympics in 2016. My first reaction is: why?
Golf is not a sport short of high-profile events. We have four Majors every year, we have even more World Golf Championships every year and we have team events of different guises every year.
Do we really need golf in the Olympics? I don't think so. Would the top, top players support it? I'm not so sure.
Would, for example, Tiger schedule his year to take in the Olympic Games? No-one could say for sure but unless the unique aspect really appealed to him I can't see him pitching up.
Nevertheless the major governing bodies have united to set up a committee which will push for the sport to be included in the 2016 games.
The International Golf Federation changed its structure following golf's failure to be included in London 2012.
Peter Dawson, chief executive of the Royal and Ancient, has said golf now "spoke with one voice."
He added: "There's much to be done, but we're putting together the right organisation to get the job done."
The IGF's Olympic committee is to be headed by PGA Tour official Ty Votaw and represents the R&A, the USGA, LPGA, PGA Tour, European Tour, Augusta National and the PGA of America.
Two from seven sports - golf, baseball, karate, roller sports, rugby sevens, softball and squash - will be added to the Games in eight years' time.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make a decision next October, when they will also decide on whether Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo or Rio de Janeiro will host the event.
Justin Rose is one who claims he would welcome the opportunity to compete in the Olympics.
"I'd love to be a part of it," said Rose, who will be 36 in 2016.
"The Olympics is all about competing at the highest level, world records and things like that. That's what the Olympics means to me. Golf at the Olympics would be fantastic."

My opinion is that golf should NEVER EVER be introduced at the Olympics.

Chris makes a valid point that there are enough Major's and enough World Championships that there doesn't need to be another.

I am a massive fan of both the Olympics and Golf but if I'm being totally honest it wouldn't interest me at all if it were introduced. I simply wouldn't watch it.

I predict the reason Justin Rose would love to play at the Olympics is because it would surely be classed as a "major", the world's best golfers wouldn't compete and he might have a chance of winning. It's the only chance he'll ever get to lifting a Major trophy in my opinion!

Rose never win a Major? Does this clown above actually watch golf?
He won't win one Major - he'll win FOUR!

No offence to the guy that has replied to my post but i really don't think you watch the same golf tournaments that I do. Rose is a spoilt brat who will NEVER win a major. he doesn't have the bottle. yeah over a couple of days he may shoot a couple of great scores but he's nothing to back it up with when it really counts. That is the reason he's all for the olympics! The courses aren't going to be as tough as say Birkdale and he won't have to compete against the same field ie my point of that being the only Major he may ever win.

have to say i agree that Rose will be a major winner. he's got the class. only Luke Donald is better of the english players. forget about casey, he's a big-hitter but has only won one big event in his career.
why is this forum getting so heated by the way?

The reason the forum is getting heated is because we have clueless numpties making claims that will never happen. I agree that Donald is better than Rose and to forget about Casey but they weren't the subject. We were talking about Justin Rose and why he is so eager for golf to be introduced at the Olympics!! "Because he will never win the Open, the US Open, the USPGA or the Masters and he sees the Olympics as his chance. Frankly I'm getting bored of repeating myself and I'm losing heart in this argument because it seems that cluelessness will carry on! It seems that there are a few Rose fans so I'm never going to win!

No need to get annoyed. Losing your temper is a sure sign that you're losing the argument.
Anyway, no doubt you'll expect America to thrash us in the ryder cup in sept?
Seeing as you don't rate Europe's No 1 golfer one little bit!

You obviously are clueless if you think Rose is Europe's number 1 golfer!!!!! You seem to be forgetting Padraig, Sergio, Karlsson, Stenson I would even go as far as to say Westwood. these are all much better and more consistent players than Mr Rose. he simply hasn't lived up to the expectations put on him!
I'm going way off the subject here but there is more chance of woeful Sunderland defender Paul McShane being bought by man Utd than rose winning a Major!

Two things:
1) Justin Rose IS Europe's No. 1 golfer. That isn't my opinion, that is a fact. He collected that accolade at the season-ending Volvo Masters.
If you don't believe me check out www.europeantour.com
2) Paul McShane has already been a Man Utd player. That's where he started his career. Check the small print on his cone-tract if you don't believe me...

Controversial post! There are so many arguments for and against, but one thing's for certain, the British have got a great chance at a gold medal!
